In 1989, the IA. Fruit & Vegetable Growers Conference started having a contest for the best cider in Iowa. A panel of judges was instructed on what criteria to use and how the cider should look, taste, smell, etc. They couldn't just pick what they personally thought tasted best. Each year we also had a "People's Choice Award" where each contestant's apple cider was sampled (anonymously) in the trade show area by all those attending the conference. 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place awards were presented for both contests. We were awarded 2nd place & 3rd place from the judges in those first years but never 1st because they thought our blend was too sweet. However - we did win the people's Choice several times ( & always placed in the top 3). We quit entering the contest after 5 years...and re-entered again in 1999. There is no longer a panel of judges - just the people' choice award. Deal's Orchard cider won 1st place in 1999, 2000, & 2001. We did not participate in 2002.

We do have excellent apple cider - our customers think it's the best around!
